decision made: my 2012 foto trip will bring me again to the Southwest

For a long time I was indecisive either again to visit the Southwest like in 2011 or to pause USA tripping in favor of revisiting Asia, and here especially China.

I made my mind up: 2012 June will be again foto trip time to the magnificent desertlands of the Southwest. Now again indecisive either to revisite known spots or go for something completly new…. Life is full of decisions. But no all are so sweet like these ones.

the portfolio grows

I finally found the time to extend my Portfolio with my latest USA fotos from the Utah trip in may/june of this year. I created new albums:

Furthermore I added new fotos to the existing albums:

My favourite hikes on this trip were the Coyote Gulch and the Cobra Arch hikes, both represented now by own albums in the Utah section.

my Utah 2011 foto trip fotos are now online

It took me more than 3 month to sort and filter my 2500 fotos, which I shot during my two week (may/june 2011) foto trip in Utah’s Grandstaircase Escalante N.M. I created a selection of my 50 favourite fotos. Enjoy and dont hesitate to give me feedback. The foto album will open up when clicking on this foto below.

Only somebody fotographing himself can understand what it means to go again and again through 2500 fotos (image size of 10-20MB) and filtering out the best shots. Every single foto is linked with a recall of the specific situation when shoting the foto. Often a technical not valuable foto still bears some memories of a nice trip incident and one is unwilling to reject it. So its is really a pain going again and again thorugh the fotos and reducing the count to a reasonable amount suited to be presented online. Therefore I have a second collection mainly for myself where i have stored all trip locations in a collection of 7 albums with 350 shots. Either from 2500 to 350 or 50, it was really hard work to scan all that material and what i learned for the next time: Dont shoot too many fotos!

The Herzogstand – Heimgarten Hike 2011

After my hikes on my GSNM phototrip in may/june this was my first long home hike in 2011. Like every year I hike the Herzogstand to Heimgarten rim loop starting in Urfeld.

A total of 20km (12.5 miles) and a summed elevation difference of 1376 m (4500 feet) in climbing.This year it took me 2h from Urfeld to Herzogstand peak, 1h on the rim from Herzogstand to Heimgarten 2 hours down to Walchensee village and finally another hour back along the Walchensee lake back to the car park. This time I had exactly tracked the Hike on the GPS to compare it with one of the more strenous hikes in USA, the Observation point hike.

Doing those hikes in US I never could really rank how difficult they were. The Observation point hike in Zion N.P. was with 4h quite short but the one I had the most elevation difference. I was surprised when comparing the GPX tracks that the summed height difference there was only 780 meter (2560 feet)..

In both hikes my pace was quite high being in good shape this year. Hope this gpx and screen logs will motivate me in the coming years to keep the pace and shape.
